The Power Spectrum of Mass Fluctuations Measured from the Lyman-alpha Forest at Redshift Z=2.5

چکیده
We measure the linear power spectrum of mass density fluctuations at redshift z = 2.5 from the Lyα forest absorption in a sample of 19 QSO spectra, using the method introduced by Croft et al. (1998). The P (k) measurement covers the range 2π/k ∼ 450 − 2350 km s (2 − 12 comoving hMpc for Ω = 1), limited on the upper end by uncertainty in fitting the unabsorbed QSO continuum and on the lower end by finite spectral resolution (0.8− 2.3Å FWHM) and by non-linear dynamical effects. We examine a number of possible sources of systematic error and find none that are significant on these scales. In particular, we show that spatial variations in the UV background caused by the discreteness of the source population should have negligible effect on our P (k) measurement. We estimate statistical errors by dividing the data set into ten subsamples. The statistical uncertainty in the rms mass fluctuation

Closing in on Ω0: the Amplitude of Mass Fluctuations from Galaxy Clusters and the Lyman-alpha Forest
We estimate the value of the matter density parameter Ω0 by combining constraints from the galaxy cluster mass function with Croft et al.’s recent measurement of the mass power spectrum, P (k), from Lyα forest data. The key assumption of the method is that cosmic structure formed by gravitational instability from Gaussian primordial fluctuations. For a specified value of Ω0, matching the observ...

We propose a method for recovering the shape of the mass power spectrum on large scales from the transmission fluctuations of the Lyman-alpha forest, which takes into account directly redshift-space distortions. The procedure, in discretized form, involves the inversion of a triangular matrix which projects the mass power spectrum in 3-D real-space to the transmission power spectrum in 1-D reds...

متن کاملTightening Constraints from the Lyman Alpha Forest with the Flux Probability Distribution Function
The analysis of the Lyman-alpha (Lyα) forest of absorption lines in quasar spectra has emerged as a potentially powerful technique to constrain the linear matter power spectrum. In most previous work, the amplitude of the ionizing background was fixed by calibrating simulations to match the observed mean transmitted flux in the Lyα forest. This procedure is undesirable in principle as it requir...
متن کاملProbing the Epoch of Reionization with the Lyman Alpha Forest at Z
The inhomogeneous cosmological reionization process leaves tangible imprints in the intergalactic medium down to z ∼ 4− 5. The Lyman-α forest flux power spectrum provides a potentially powerful probe of the epoch of reionization. With the expected full SDSS III quasar sample (∼ 10, 000 quasars) we show that two cosmological reionization scenarios, one completing reionization at z = 6 and the ot...
